Dilemmas in Software Engineering -- Stephen Norrie points to a paper from John Sambrook, entitled Dealing With Dilemmas In Software Engineering [pdf], and quotes from it's abstract...
"Software engineering is a complex and demanding activity. The degree to which engineering teams are able to recognize dilemmatic situations and resolve them quickly and without compromising important needs has a large impact on the performance of the team and the quality of the developed software. […] In this article we explore the nature of dilemmas and provide actionable advice that individuals and groups can use to improve their ability to recognize and resolve dilemmas in an effective manner."
The paper goes on to describe dilemmas in TOC terms and provides some good information on one of the most powerful of the TOC Thinking Process tools both in general and in a software-related example. As you'll read, conflicts and dilemmas are perpetuated by unexamined assumptions. (More on this Thinking Process tool here and here.)
