A Classic Returns - Cosmos

Missed the December 25th marathon, but good news: Carl Sagan's Cosmos will be airing in its entirety beginning January 8th on the Discovery Science Channel, check your local listings.

Here's an updated video riff on Sagan's elegy on our "Pale Blue Dot".

Quote of the Day

"If it means sacrificing our lives, if it means sacrificing our liberties to save Pakistan, then we are prepared to risk our lives and we are prepared to risk our liberties, but we are not prepared to surrender our great nation to the militants."
- Benazir Bhutto

While we futz around worrying about Iran, we overlook the risks of our nuclear "ally" and its tin-pot military dictator, who's allowed (caused) all too much chaos to fester.

24 x 6 = 144

Just finished watching the last disk of Season 6 of 24 last night. Two questions keep rattling around in my mind.

Did daddy get to the boat before the jets hit?

When is Marilyn going to tell Jack that Josh is really his son?

Deja vu over and over

Reuters has posted a gallery of best pictures of 2007. Unfortunately, you can't link to individual pics, but I was struck by the compositional similarity of #s 73, 84, and 41 in the list.

Creationists can't make up their mind

From Science Friday Archives: Education and Evolution in Texas, a story about a science educator in Texas being forced to step down for "informing colleagues of a talk on the conflict over the teaching of evolution." I thought the creationist crazies wanted to "teach the conflict" to get their message into the minds of kids, but I guess not to get the message into the minds of teachers when the speaker is the author of "Creationism's Trojan Horse: The Wedge of Intelligent Design."

I guess creationists aren't as rigid in their thinking as I thought.
